DESCRIPTION:May 9–10 — We invite alternative education enthusiasts\, parents\, and everyone who wants to help build a better world through education to celebrate 40 years of joy and learning at our family school: LiberSchool. \nForty years ago\, when Damanhur was only 11 years old\, a radical seed was planted: to take charge of our children’s education by creating a school that honored the divine nature of every child — a true alternative reflecting our vision of what humanity could become: free from conditioning\, fully recognizing and expressing our divine nature. \nThat seed grew into LiberSchool\, a Community School accompanying children from 6 months to 14 years old in their growth and learning journey. \nFor four decades\, LiberSchool has been one of Damanhur’s most transformative and demanding projects\, requiring resources\, sacrifice\, creativity\, love\, and an unwavering belief that another way of educating was not only possible\, but essential. And the results are heartwarming: today\, LiberSchool serves 75 children with 30 teachers and has become a choice for non-Damanhurian families as well. 60% of the children come from nearby villages and 40% from the Damanhur community\, with one third having at least one non-Italian parent — reflecting the school’s truly international environment. \nIn 2025\, LiberSchool reached another important milestone: it became a Gaia School\, certified by Gaia Education\, integrating the four dimensions of the ecovillage design framework — Social\, Ecological\, Economic\, and Worldview — into both our curriculum and daily school life. \nLiberSchool’s mission is to accompany children towards harmonious growth — physically\, emotionally\, intellectually\, and spiritually — awakening all aspects of themselves\, helping them discover who they are\, their talents\, their potential\, and their desires\, and learning to be happy in the world. In-person at DamanhurCrea and Online. \nSaturday\, January 17 | 3:00–6:00 PM \nThe most difficult question about Artificial Intelligence is not whether it can become like us\, but what it forces us to rethink about ourselves. \nThis seminar is part of the cycle Frontiers of Philosophy and AI and continues the critical reflection initiated by Antonio Santangelo in Critique of ChatGPT (Eleuthera\, 2025)\, which examined the limits and misunderstandings surrounding Large Language Models\, the naïveté of considering them “truly intelligent\,” and their already tangible impacts on the environment\, economy\, production systems\, and the protection of rights. \nThe January 17 meeting shifts the focus toward scientific innovation in AI and the metaphysical\, ontological\, spiritual\, and ethical questions that challenge long-established scientific\, philosophical\, and religious certainties. This question emerges in light of recent advancements in new Artificial\nIntelligence Systems (AI)\, which generate both thrilling expectations and concerns for the future. From this inquiry\, another question arises  (quietly more or less): will AI achieve consciousness? Numerous fields within cognitive science are confident about this possibility\, while philosophers of science and phenomenologists express even greater certainty. \nThe emergence of new “Artificial” Intelligence Systems highlights the essential question of “consciousness\,” often referred to as the “difficult problem” in science. This topic has been the focus of a serious field of study for several decades\, intertwining philosophy\, neuroscience\, psychology\, and neurobiology. One might\, albeit with some “embarrassment\,” characterize “consciousness” as a concept that currently replaces what mythologies and religions have historically labeled as the “soul”: an immaterial principle or vital breath\, or divine spark\, symbolizing that indefinable “other” in relation to the physical body\, which is limited in its capabilities and destined for finitude. This “presence” (soul or consciousness) that resides within us\, or that we inhabit\, distinct from the body or its emerging manifestation\, represents a sort of “imprint” characteristic of humanity\, or of “biological” life\, which differentiates us from machines—those very creations of ours that possess the ability to transcend biological limitations. While the soul has traditionally been viewed by mythologies and religions as a substance separate from the body\, consciousness remains a concept caught between ambiguous definitions: some argue it is a different manifestation of the same physical nature\, others assert it is a principle distinct from physical nature\, or an epiphenomenon arising from the complexity of physical nature. It is also important to recognize that animals exhibit varying levels of consciousness\, and there are perspectives on consciousness that envision it as a complex web that interconnects not only all forms of animal life but also plant and mineral life\, thereby permeating the entire universe..\nThe education of new generations must take into account the complexity of these issues\, which in the last century have been relegated to the realm of “personal beliefs” and “religious convictions” of individuals. Reassessing them involves engaging with a conflict that has permeated the history of thought and culture\, manifested in the dialectic between myth and philosophy in antiquity\, between faith and reason in the Middle Ages\, and between science and religion in modernity\, now evolving into a confrontation between spirituality and science. This conflict\nremains unresolved\, deeply rooted in our “heritage\,” and can become painful when it leads to the prevalent phenomenon of our time known as “disenchantment.” Conversely\, it can also inspire new perspectives that challenge the very boundaries of “human possibilities” in knowledge and understanding. It is on this frontier that the educational commitment to new generations is evaluated. Educators\, teachers\, and parents face the challenging responsibility of navigating relationships with the complex issues that the current development of AI\nnecessitates. The focus should not be on whether Artificial Intelligence will eventually resemble human intelligence\, but rather on ensuring that human intelligence does not gradually conform to the standards set by Artificial Intelligence. \nThe seminar marks the culmination of a training course for educators of the Liber School Association\, led by Dr. Alessandra Luciano. This course concentrated on the latest advancements in AI\, particularly concerning the philosophical and ethical dilemmas that future generations will need to contemplate regarding the capabilities of emerging technologies. The concluding day of the course consists of two segments: The morning segment\, Intelligence and Consciousness. The “Fragile” Frontier between Science and Spirituality\, focuses on theoretical inquiries related to the advancement of AI\, encompassing the discourse between cognitive science and philosophy\, as well as the interplay between scientific advancement and spirituality. The afternoon segment on Sustainable Education and Spirituality in the Age of Artificial Intelligence focuses on promoting the advancement of new technologies within educational initiatives that are deeply rooted in the principles of sustainability and spirituality. \nIntelligence and Consciousness: The Delicate Boundary Between Science and Spirituality\n9.30 – 12.30 \n9:30 – 10:00 Alessandra Luciano\nDivinity\, the Spirit\, and Artificial Intelligence\nAn introduction to the seminar that reflects on the questions posed by AI and their connection to the philosophical inquiries of the 13th-century scholastics regarding the intellect\, the soul\, and God (or being/intellect)\, along with the tension between philosophy and theology\, as well as science and religion. \n10:00 – 11:00 Michel Bitbol\nA personal critique of the artificial consciousness project\n(debate follows)\nContemporary cognitive science asserts that it has identified the necessary and sufficient conditions to “produce” consciousness and claims that it will soon be able to create conscious artifacts. However\, in their efforts to define consciousness\, have cognitive scientists overlooked the crucial yet indefinable aspect of conscious existence\, which is lived experience? Moreover\, what value is there in attributing consciousness to an entity if the only definitive proof of its consciousness in the fullest sense could only be achieved by placing\noneself\, so to speak\, “in its shoes\,” meaning to experience what it is experiencing? Thus\, the quest for artificial consciousness is less a coherent project and more a reflection of a persistent philosophical misunderstanding regarding the unique status of consciousness within the realm of knowledge and existence. Alternatively\, it may indicate a troubling trend of our increasing inability to engage with our own reality\, highlighting our tendency to evade our true selves. Ultimately\, the criteria employed to validate the success of creating a conscious artifact are expressed in the second person plural (“we recognize\, from the outside\, this being as conscious”)\, neglecting the first person perspective that should be central to this evaluation. \n  \nMichel Bitbol \nPhilosopher of science\, serves as Research Director Emeritus at the CNRS (Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique) in Paris. He possesses a degree in medicine and a PhD in physics. His research focuses on the connections between quantum mechanics\, the philosophy of mind\, and consciousness\, building upon the work initiated in close collaboration with Francisco Varela. \n \n  \n11:30 AM – 12:30 PM Luigi Berzano\nArtificial Consciousness and Spirituality: Comparisons\n(debate follows)\nAnalogies represent relationships of similarity that are considered fundamental to various phenomena\, allowing them to be viewed with a certain degree of equality. One of the most intriguing contemporary analogies is that between spirituality and artificial intelligence or artificial consciousness. Many scholars argue that there remains a profound difference between spirituality and artificial consciousness.\nHowever\, there is a contrasting viewpoint held by those who believe that the “singularity” of transhumanism\, viewed as the most extreme perspective of artificial consciousness\, is imminent. They contend that in the coming decades\, the traditional foundational concepts of scientific\, cultural\, and religious systems that have been established to provide meaning to life\, including the cycles of birth and\ndeath\, will undergo transformation. In this context\, both first-person subjective experiences (which are synonymous with consciousness) and the imagination of others’ subjective experiences will play a role. Spirituality will also be integral as it pertains to the meaning of transcendence across all levels of reality\, including the creation of the natural world and humanity. For these optimistic proponents of\ntranshumanism\, unexpected connections between science and spirituality are anticipated to emerge in the coming decades. In this paper\, I will present a perspective that interprets the transition from artificial intelligence (AI) to artificial consciousness (AC) – and consequently the analogy between spirituality and artificial consciousness – through three possible lenses: the problem\, the enigma\, and the mystery. The problem is framed as a task within our capabilities\, aimed at providing answers to every conceivable question. The enigma occupies a middle ground between the problem and the mystery\, as it captivates\, immobilizes\, yet invites resolution through two types of explanations:\nthe first offers the key to the enigma and resolves it; the second helps us comprehend what rendered it an enigma. The mystery transcends human understanding\, creating a chasm that appears too vast to bridge with our cognitive abilities. This paper delves into the realm of the Mystery\, presenting elements that support both the optimism of transhumanism and its inherent limitations. \n  \nLuigi Berzano \nA sociologist specializing in religion\, holds the title of Full Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the Luigi Einaudi Campus of the University of Turin and has served as Past President of the National Association of Sociology of Religion AIS.
