The most difficult question about Artificial Intelligence is not whether it can become like us, but what it forces us to rethink about ourselves.
This seminar is part of the cycle Frontiers of Philosophy and AI and continues the critical reflection initiated by Antonio Santangelo in Critique of ChatGPT (Eleuthera, 2025), which examined the limits and misunderstandings surrounding Large Language Models, the naïveté of considering them “truly intelligent,” and their already tangible impacts on the environment, economy, production systems, and the protection of rights.
The January 17 meeting shifts the focus toward scientific innovation in AI and the metaphysical, ontological, spiritual, and ethical questions that challenge long-established scientific, philosophical, and religious certainties. Rather than centering on whether AI can be intelligent or even “conscious,” the seminar explores a deeper issue: how this technological revolution compels us to reconsider the mystery of the human being and of consciousness itself, beyond the fragile assumptions we have relied on so far.
Two authoritative voices in contemporary debate will engage in dialogue on these themes:
Giovanni Leghissa, philosopher, whose work is grounded in an innovative phenomenological perspective, and
Luigi Berzano, sociologist of religion, who has long studied the emergence of new forms of spirituality as phenomena parallel to the radical processes of secularization in our time.
Their perspectives move decisively beyond technological determinism, opening a space of inquiry where cybernetics, phenomenology, and reflections on spirituality intersect, pointing toward new frontiers of the knowable.
